For the last four years I have been working as an independent doula. For the most part it has been wonderful. I choose how many births I take and how far I am willing to drive for a client. I don’t have to consult with anyone else when I make decisions about my business cards or website. I am my own boss. Unfortunately, there are some downsides to working on my own. Although I have a wonderful doula community in this area, it is sometimes difficult to secure reliable backup just in case something happened beyond my control. Although I get to make creative decisions on my own, I have often found the work of keeping up with the business side of my work to be a bit overwhelming.
Earlier this week, I found the solution that I have been looking for. A wonderful collective of women that I highly respect asked me to join them in Tree Town Doulas. I couldn’t be more excited to be working with such a wonderful group of people. Martha was actually my doula for my second baby. In addition to being a birth doula she also does placenta encapsulation and is a postpartum doula. Anna was one of the homebirth midwives for my little boy. She is a master of herbs and a fabulous doula. Catherine is a very well respected resource for parents in the Ann Arbor area. She teaches parenting classes in addition to attending births. I am humbled that they would invite me to join them, but I am so excited that they have. I know that they will push me to be a better doula and to explore more areas of the birth world. I am also excited to have a wonderful team to back me up if there is ever a time that I cannot be there for my clients.
There will be a few changes for Doula Toni. My service area may become a bit smaller and my prices will go up a bit. The value for my clients, however, is so much greater. The resources and security that this team will bring me will make it much easier for me to devote myself completely to my clients. This new chapter in my life is so exciting and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
